Introduction by Marta Daho

Herbert Weber is interested in dismantling some traditional codes of lecture and to reveal the unsettling factor that pervades our perception of a photographic image. Like an outstanding disciple of G.K. Chesterton, Weber creates sophisticated parodies related to some of the most conventional aspects of the photographic act. The most obvious: undermine the certainty with which we tend to differentiate between documentary and staged photography. In Weber’s work, both converge in a cheerful and unusual way. Doesn’t staged photography also have documentary value? While looking at his images, one might ponder which photographic category we should give more documentary credibility. To the mere representation of an already-made performance or the staging of the act of capturing an image?

Poll results
Our poll "A photo essay always needs a great written story" closed. 267 people voted, 28% agrees, 72% disagrees. 233 people answered our follow-up question "Are you a photographer?" 82% indicated they are, 18% said no. Initially, negative answers to question #1 were almost 100% as was the pecentage of photographers among respondants. Then, when the level of non-photographers started to rise, the percentage of people indicating good text is always essential started to rise too. This seems to indicate that non-photographers think that adding good text to your photo essays is essential. In my opinion: if you want non-photographers to dig your work, you know what to do...

Artist Testimonial

I have been working with my person as a protagonist in front of my camera for more than five years now.

The selection presented here comprises photographs from different projects.

I selected them, because in all of these pictures paper is the subject.

In the end, the questions are always the same: what can photography show what exactly are we able to see and understand?

Not much, I think, but we try.

I don’t believe that I will understand the world at some point, just because I photograph myself and these papers.

I do think this approach, like so many others, has meaning.
