  1. I FOUND YOURS CHOICES OF PHOTOGRAPHERS EXTREMILY INTRESTING

Introduction by Regina Anzenberger

I love photography – all kinds of styles, various themes and photographers who dedicate themselves to personal subjects and picture languages. My choice of essays and photographers shall show that. Black and white, colour, different formats, reportage, concept and even iphone photography. But one thing photography has to do for sure: to tell us a story!

On Andrei Liankevich: “Fake Animals” is part of a book project on Pagan customs. Animals are playing an important role in the Pagan tradition. As if they were alive in the silence and mystery of the museum the animals are looking strong in their individual character. Andrei Liankevich is the most interesting and talented young artist of Belarus. He managed to connect to the Western and international artist world in spite of his difficult situation in an isolated country. Andrei is developing new visual languages and themes for national and international audiences, it is often very courageous to present them amongst the traditional and conservative opinions in his own country.

Poll results
Our poll "A photo essay always needs a great written story" closed. 267 people voted, 28% agrees, 72% disagrees. 233 people answered our follow-up question "Are you a photographer?" 82% indicated they are, 18% said no. Initially, negative answers to question #1 were almost 100% as was the pecentage of photographers among respondants. Then, when the level of non-photographers started to rise, the percentage of people indicating good text is always essential started to rise too. This seems to indicate that non-photographers think that adding good text to your photo essays is essential. In my opinion: if you want non-photographers to dig your work, you know what to do...

Artist Testimonial

The story Fake Animals is part of a bigger project and book covering the topic of Belarus Pagan traditions.

In the story I try to discover Paganism as the culture, not just as a faith.

That is why I need to photograph sacred animals.

And stuffed animals were the best way to communicate feelings of magic and surrealism.
