Catharsis
Joonas Brandt is one of the most talented Finnish photographers of the younger generation. His outstanding series of musicians just shows his talent as an artist. Brandt begun his photography project After The Gig four years ago and the project is still going on. He portrays musicians that have just gone off stage, at the precise moment when they go back to being their private selves.
The moment that Brandt captures is so pure and intimate that it almost looks like watching a sex act. The idea is just brilliant. It is that revealing moment when the facade has fallen down and the star is naked without any elements of stardom.
Brandt captures the moments in just a few seconds. If he goes wrong technically, he has lost his chance. This is something that would scare many photographers. The lack of control frightens so many of us.
Brandt took a risk when he started this project. He continues taking the risk again and again. But only taking risks we can actually create something unique and powerful.
This week is curated by Hannamari Shakya, chief editor of PhotoRaw magazine, a bilingual photo magazine from Finland.

Our poll "A photo essay always needs a great written story" closed. 267 people voted, 28% agrees, 72% disagrees. 233 people answered our follow-up question "Are you a photographer?" 82% indicated they are, 18% said no. Initially, negative answers to question #1 were almost 100% as was the pecentage of photographers among respondants. Then, when the level of non-photographers started to rise, the percentage of people indicating good text is always essential started to rise too. This seems to indicate that non-photographers think that adding good text to your photo essays is essential. In my opinion: if you want non-photographers to dig your work, you know what to do...
The work presented here is a fifteen picture edition from the After The Gig series, comprising portraits of musicians straight after the show.
I started working on this project since 2006.
The idea is to capture the artist immediately after stepping off stage.
Usually it takes two to ten seconds to get the shot. After that artists, well, they wake up and the moment vanishes.
There is a short moment of having given all and being in their own world, sort of naked, one could say.
Joonas Brandt (1977) lives and works in Helsinki, Finland.
