Introduction by Marga Rotteveel

Simplicity is powerful. In order to make her enhance her concept, Anouk Paulissen folded her photographs and subsequently combined them. She simply folded away the parts that she didn’t need. Young photographers are increasingly exploring the bounderies of the photographic medium. Not just by using new technologies, but also by manipulating images physically. Paulissen does so consistently and demonstrates the choking way a small American town is manipulated, producing a strong piece of conceptual photography.

Poll results
Our poll "A photo essay always needs a great written story" closed. 267 people voted, 28% agrees, 72% disagrees. 233 people answered our follow-up question "Are you a photographer?" 82% indicated they are, 18% said no. Initially, negative answers to question #1 were almost 100% as was the pecentage of photographers among respondants. Then, when the level of non-photographers started to rise, the percentage of people indicating good text is always essential started to rise too. This seems to indicate that non-photographers think that adding good text to your photo essays is essential. In my opinion: if you want non-photographers to dig your work, you know what to do...

Artist Testimonial

I went to Orlando with the aim to investigate the influence of Walt Disney on the conceptualization and perception of nature, focussing on front lawns and gardens.

Celebration is a town southwest of Orlando and was built on former marshland next to Walt Disney World. The town was designed by Disney and based on the American ideal of a nostalgic American small-town, accommodating a community within an open atmosphere. It is a response to the impersonal character of the modern city. In 1996 the first people started moving into their homes.

When people decide to live in Celebration they can choose a house from several basic designs, which have been designed according to a certain theme.

The town has guidelines for the houses as well as for the gardens. These include a compulsory list of plants. These gardens are regularly checked by an especially formed committee.

By photographing one type of house in the same manner and by subjecting the photographs in its presentation according to my own rules, the dominance of Disney in Celebration’s nature becomes tangible. I have folded the photographs in order to exclude “disturbing” elements which do not form part of the gardens as are layed out by the house-owners. With the remains I have constructed new gardens / combinations with so many similarities that they can actually go through as a whole new garden.

Nature is to be perfect, like Disney’s dream world.
