Introduction by Marga Rotteveel

Exactly what is it you are looking at when viewing Kevin Rekkers’ photographs? Is it China in Orlando, Orlando in China? It is clear that this is a place where two cultures meet, symbolically. Kevin found a derelict amusement park named “Splendid China,” where visitors could marvel at the wonders of China without having to fly to Beijing. Splendid China closed its doors in 2003. Poll results
Our poll "A photo essay always needs a great written story" closed. 267 people voted, 28% agrees, 72% disagrees. 233 people answered our follow-up question "Are you a photographer?" 82% indicated they are, 18% said no. Artist Testimonial

While staying at the concrete horror strip of Kissimmee there seemed to be no escape from the Disney World dictatorship. The Disney corporation rule this part of the United States.

I knew there had to be an alternative, a way to spend your day without bumping into Mickey.

I felt the urge to discover something different. I didn’t want to believe in the Disney simulacrum that surrounded me everywhere everyday.

At one point a particularly styled wall attracted my attention. Splendid China Boulevard is the name of the street. I was curious to see what was behind this wall and what I found exceeded my expectations.

I found China right there in Orlando.

What is left of it today is a weird mixture of clashing cultures. Replications of famous Chinese sights collide with contemporary American culture, all situated in the periphery of the theme-park capitol of the world.
