Curator Statement – Marcelo Brodsky on Pablo Cabado
If a week of Argentinian photography has something special, than that should be found in the distinct approach that our photographers take towards our land and people. Everything is always surprising. You never know what you will get when you are out there in your car, carrying a camera, shooting photographs. A permanent road movie is what Pablo lives when he drives through our Pampas, looking for images. People, animals, scenery, a mixture of discoveries and unexpected encounters. Pablo received a Guggenheim award to shoot around Argentina, and he has been doing this for years. He loves the countryside and its people. But he is also a bit skeptical. His essay is an ongoing project, a changing scene, a broken sign, a car to sleep in, a photographic discovery, a simple idea: to shoot around unknown territory.

Our poll "A photo essay always needs a great written story" closed. 267 people voted, 28% agrees, 72% disagrees. 233 people answered our follow-up question "Are you a photographer?" 82% indicated they are, 18% said no. Initially, negative answers to question #1 were almost 100% as was the pecentage of photographers among respondants. Then, when the level of non-photographers started to rise, the percentage of people indicating good text is always essential started to rise too. This seems to indicate that non-photographers think that adding good text to your photo essays is essential. In my opinion: if you want non-photographers to dig your work, you know what to do...
This portrait of a derelict amusement park in Argentina uncovers the lives that remain in the shards of collapsed rides and rusting colors.
With his large format camera, Pablo Cabado portrays a grim reality of mysterious people and animals living on the edge of society.
The work is made with a poetic eye, gently shedding light on varied life-forces gone awry. It has captured what is left of an entertainment park that was abandoned more than ten years ago.
