Artur Eranosian - Introduction and Curator Statement
This week Belgian photoblogger Artur Eranosian is presenting you seven young talented photographers. Eranosian: my country produced a significant number of internationally acclaimed photographers. This is the new generation. Apart from a blogger I am a photography student myself and the photographers presented here are my sources of inspiration. Frederik Buyckx has the ability to come close to people and to communicate the compassion he feels for them. I find his visions of Pakistan beautiful and intriguing. As a small note of criticism, I do think that he needs to narrow down his subject a bit. That will lift his work from a set of fascinating daily life scenes to true compelling storytelling.

Poll results
Our poll "A photo essay always needs a great written story" closed. 267 people voted, 28% agrees, 72% disagrees. 233 people answered our follow-up question "Are you a photographer?" 82% indicated they are, 18% said no. Initially, negative answers to question #1 were almost 100% as was the pecentage of photographers among respondants. Then, when the level of non-photographers started to rise, the percentage of people indicating good text is always essential started to rise too. This seems to indicate that non-photographers think that adding good text to your photo essays is essential. In my opinion: if you want non-photographers to dig your work, you know what to do...

Artist Testimonial

Much of what we read and see nowadays about Pakistan is bombings, killings, war, fugitives. But problems are located in a small part of the country, that inhabits 165 million people. Without ignoring the problems and dangers in one certain region, one should not generalize about the whole country.

One consequence of the one sided way Pakistan is covered in the media is a total collapse of tourism. People who are not intimidated by all they’ve seen in the media and still want to visit Pakistan, are advised by their embassies not to do so.

I want to tell a different story. About people living their lives as they always have.

And if you look good enough, there’s this absurdity connected to living in this bizar but intriguing country. Sometime it’s habits and traditions that cause a strange athmosphere, sometimes it’s the situation and sometimes a combination of both.

I have used photography to show what I've seen in this wonderful country, what I think and feel about Pakistan.

I met a lot of Pakistani people, they treat strangers like real guests. So please, be their guest!
