Curator statement, Kate Edwards on Rosanna Salonia
I struggled on whether to include Rosanna's work in this selection, or that of her partner Matthew Yates – fortunately for me, Rosanna sent me a collaborative piece that she did with Matthew under their collective name Vitamina, so I was able to include them both. Rosanna's Universi series (will be published separately on our blog section next week, ed.) is mystical, dreamy and enchanting. It makes you want to be where they are and see what they see. Even better, the original images are all different sized prints, covered in natural beeswax and presented in a small wooden box – they become precious objects with a feeling of timelessness that are beautiful to hold and touch as well as look at. Our poll "A photo essay always needs a great written story" closed. 267 people voted, 28% agrees, 72% disagrees. 233 people answered our follow-up question "Are you a photographer?" 82% indicated they are, 18% said no. Initially, negative answers to question #1 were almost 100% as was the pecentage of photographers among respondants. Then, when the level of non-photographers started to rise, the percentage of people indicating good text is always essential started to rise too. This seems to indicate that non-photographers think that adding good text to your photo essays is essential. In my opinion: if you want non-photographers to dig your work, you know what to do...
a woman sits on a crowded metro car…
telephone poles heavily veined with wires the sun painting shadows on the tall glass buildings murmur of voices sleep.
she is in a lucid dream state, imagining her past her future her now candy colored lights and the soft silk of her mother’s kimon deep into the trance of memory, the murmur of voices still present sounds of a man coughing wakes her and she wonders did I miss my stop or am I still asleep?
Fotovitamina is Rosanna Salonia and Matthew Yates, two fine-art photographers based in Tucson, in the arid zone of the United States.
Rosanna and Matthew are set on living their dream: discovering the world through photography, while utilizing a variety of old-school cameras and techniques, including toy-cameras and expired film.
The approach is serendipitous and impulsive, the intent is to capture the feel of a situation rather than to describe it.
In november 2007 they traveled to japan to photograph their friend’s wedding to his japanese bride. Euphoria, exhaustion, and wonderment were the driving forces of those 9 days of exploration.
Rosanna Salonia and Matthew Yates (1971) lives and works in Tucson, USA.
