Curator Statement by Joana Mazza
Gustavo Malheiros already has a series of published books and a consolidated career in the advertising market, but in his last book Pedra e Luz – Bom Jesus da Lapa he reinvents his way of glancing. The work has two sources, the portraits have been made in an improvised studio, the other part is the documentation of what he finds during the traditional Bom Jesus da Lapa pilgrimage. Gustavo presents his testimony to us of this historical moment of transformation taking us through the process of agricultural reform with his distinguished and complex glance over the peregrination and its characters.

Our poll "A photo essay always needs a great written story" closed. 267 people voted, 28% agrees, 72% disagrees. 233 people answered our follow-up question "Are you a photographer?" 82% indicated they are, 18% said no. Initially, negative answers to question #1 were almost 100% as was the pecentage of photographers among respondants. Then, when the level of non-photographers started to rise, the percentage of people indicating good text is always essential started to rise too. This seems to indicate that non-photographers think that adding good text to your photo essays is essential. In my opinion: if you want non-photographers to dig your work, you know what to do...
It was by my wife's idea that Arte Ensaio, a publishing company, asked me to make a book about Bom Jesus da Lapa at Sertão da Bahia.
I was concerned about it, but I was given compleet freedom.
I started my research about the place and, to be honest, apart from the inspirations on Avedon's portraits, I couldn't find much to help.
By the time I arrived in Bom Jesus da Lapa, I realised that I was given an enourmous gift.
As days went by I was more enthusiastic about the people and the place. I was living in another world, that I would not have found, had I not been a photographer.
I was an unique experience that inspired me and changed me as a photographer.
